Underground Galaxy and Future-Oriented Design, Innovative Practice of MULTI-Dimensional City - OBERMEYER’s Underground Metropolis Project in Wuhan Optics Valley Central City Featured on CCTV’s "Big Country Construction" .
During CCTV’s 2025 Spring Festival Gala, Wuhan Optics Valley Galaxy Plaza shone under the spotlight, with its backdrop, the "largest underground city in Asia" - the underground space of Wuhan Optics Valley Central City, astonishing the nation with its unique sci-tech aesthetics. This represents a fruitful collaboration between OBERMEYER as the core design enterprise from the year 2014 onwards and the Optics Valley in Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Zone, serving as a vivid example of a MULTI-dimensional city implementation.

CCTV Focuses on Wuhan Optics Valley Underground Space: Exploring the City's "Lifeline" Infrastructure Project

Recently, CCTV Finance Channel spotlighted the “Urban Lifeline” project of Wuhan Optics Valley’s underground space in the documentary Big Country Construction (Season 4: City Pulse), showcasing the exploration and practice of “invisible infrastructure”.

Wuhan is renowned as the "City of Thousand Lakes". The project aims to ensure a smooth water system and interconnectedness, fostering a connection between humans and nature. It introduces the Xinyuexi water system for precipitation regulation and storage, allowing living water to flow southward through the box culverts beneath the project structure towards Baozixi, branches of Liangzi Lake, and Nushan Lake, effectively mitigating the risk of water inundating the subway and pipeline corridors during severe rainstorms. Meanwhile, the underground area creates a new type of public interaction space by establishing open, continuous, and user-friendly public spaces, rhythmically incorporating sunken plazas, enabling the public to enter an underground city that harmoniously coexists with nature.

As a global leader in planning and design, OBERMEYER has been consistently explored and practiced the future forms of urban space. Wuhan Optics Valley Center City Underground Space Project, integrating international experience with local realities, is the largest single underground space development project, and provides a new paradigm for the development of underground space in megacities with the core of "Integrated Design, Multi-dimensional Synergy, and Ecological Empowerment".

OBERMEYER – Pioneering CBD, Urban Underground Space and MULTI-Dimensional City Planning

OBERMEYER has abundant underground space experiences around the world. Stachus underground commercial project in Munich/Germany designed by OBERMEYER in the 1960s, which was the largest underground project in Europe at that time, became a milestone project for the rising business of OBERMEYER. More than 30 years later, in China, OBERMEYER designed and realized Hangzhou Qianjiang New Town Core Area Urban Design and underground space of Guangzhou Zhujiang New Town CBD Central Axis Comprehensive Design, both of which have become leading new CBD and Multi-Dimentional City as demonstration projects in China.

China's urbanization has entered a new phase of metropolitan area development, with resource and factors increasingly concentrating in megacities and central cities. Urban development has revealed a trend of MULTI-dimensional and synergistic development above and below ground, and the integration of underground space has provided foundational conditions for building SMART cities. OBERMEYER pioneered that development and leverages its rich domestic and international experience in underground spaces to drive urban renewal in China, aiding in the creation of a new engine for urban excellence.
